Daniela Graber Mr. Quick Expository Writing 2 4/15/2024 The Social Dilemma Rhetorical Analysis The Social Dilemma was directed by Jeff Orlowski and produced by Larissa Rhodes, but the main speaker of the documentary who focused on spreading the message was Tristan Harris, a former Google design ethicist and the co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology. Tristan took on the role of communicating the documentary’s message that social media managers control and manipulate their app’s feed to keep the user engaged. Comparing drugs and social media may not be enjoyable, but it helps make the documentary’s point more clear: social media dependency is harmful to the user as the seller continues to lure you in with new and enticing products. Social media luring in users to become dependent becomes much more apparent whenever the documentary shows a fictional but realistic family. The youngest daughter smashes open a container because she cannot handle being away from her phone for dinner, despite crying when her newest selfie gets one negative comment. People can see themselves or their children in the daughter’s obsession with her phone and social media, despite the damage it does to her emotional and mental state. Meanwhile, the man stayed off his phone for three days because he made a bet after claiming that he was not addicted. Alcoholics, gamblers, drug users, and anyone else with an addiction almost always say that they can stop whenever they want because they are not actually addicted.
