To teach; to lead; to inspire. Three simple duties. Coaches have the responsibility to perform in each area, but the art of inspiration is the an imperative skill to possess. The ability to motivate a group of people, whether it be high school football players, college hockey players, or professional athletes, is a commonality found between the three speakers. Inspiration can be affected in a profusion of different ways. Both literary works and visual works can galvanize audiences, but there is a certain aura about speeches that always seems to captivate audiences. The speeches orated by Herman Boone, Herb Brooks, and Al Pacino employ numerous rhetorical strategies and utilize different tones to accomplish a single common objective. Through various rhetorical appeals, speakers can control the responses of their audiences and increase the chance of achieving their purpose. In an attempt to empower the eyes that look upon them, all three orators employ appeals to all three rhetorical categories. Before the speeches even began, a certain level of ethos is established. As coaches and leaders of their players, all three coaches have a certain level of ethos as it is expected that their players will listen out of respect. In his speech, Herb Brooks tells his players the reality of the situation they are in by explaining the facts and odds. He says, “ If we played 'em ten times, they might win nine. But not this game.
