Who Was He? There are many theories as to who the self-proclaimed Zodiac Killer was. Some say he was the news editor Richard Gaikowski or the teacher Arthur Leigh Allen. A ton of suspects have been looked into for the murders of many in the San Francisco Bay Area from 1968 to 1974 and possibly longer. They have confirmed from many witnesses that the killer was male but they still could not find him. There are many suspects and this writing covers the main suspects in the case: Richard Gaikowski, Arthur Leigh Allen, Rick Marshall, and Lawrence Kane. One of the most likely suspects is Richard Gaikowski. He was born in Watertown, South Dakota and served some time as a medic in the army. Medics were trained to tear off clothes to use as a bandage …show more content…

The preferred part of clothes was the shirttail and one of the Zodiac’s victims had their shirttail cut off. Unfortunately, not much is known of his army career because of a fire in 1973 which destroyed 80% of his records. Gaikowski was a news reporter and was once arrested before so he could get and inside look at the prison. Because he was not important at the time they did not keep his fingerprints. Gaikowski has been proven to have followed a future Zodiac victim to Albany, New York where her husband worked for a rival newspaper. In one of the Zodiac’s ciphers and letters Albany Medical Center is mentioned. In 1969, 1970, and 1971 he was a proud member of a pro-violence newspaper and in 1969 Good Times, the pro-violence newspaper, wrote stories which were a near blueprint to future Zodiac crimes. He was an elementary school teacher. He was given a zodiac watch for Christmas 1967 which Arthur estimated he got in July or August in 1969. His brother confirmed he had gotten it on Christmas day in 1967. Which is a big difference from July/August 1969. The zodiac symbol on the watch (cross circle symbol) became the Zodiac’s killer’s symbol later. He had a conversation with his friend Don Cheney (est. Jan 1st 1969) in which he made these claims, saying he was writing a novel based on it. “He would like to kill couples at random. He would taunt the police with letters detailing his crimes, He would sign the letters with a cross circle symbol from his watch, He would call himself the “Zodiac”. He would wear makeup to change his appearance. He would attach a flashlight to the barrel of his gun to shoot at night. He would fool women into stopping their cars in rural areas by claiming they had problems with their tires, then loosen their lug nuts and eventually take them captive.” (quote found on Zodiac Suspect Arthur Leigh Allen) With this very incriminating evidence Don took the information to the police, and in 1972 the San Francisco Police Department got a search warrant. The SFPD decided to search a trailer Arthur frequently used instead of his house and they found nothing incriminating. If they had only searched his house, there is a good chance he would have been arrested and I would not be writing this article. Arthur
