Interestingly enough, apology speeches do not necessarily include actual apologies. This essay will demonstrate that Richard M. Nixon’s Checkers speech belongs to the rhetorical genre apologia, imploring many characteristics common to an apology, but also serves as a campaign stump speech. The genre apologia, gets its name from ancient Greece were it meant ‘defense of’. (Lewis & Short, 1889).
Rhetorical devices in “Checkers” In Senator Nixon’s “Checkers'' speech, the literary term rhetoric is used. Nixon was accused of taking excessive amounts of money from his supporters for personal use instead of using it to better the country. He plays on the emotions of patriotic, family-loving audience members to refute the arguement and convince people to vote for him. In this speech, rhetorical devices enhance the audience’s trust, persuade the audience he is not corrupt, and proves he has a true desire to help America.
Barbara Jordan gave a powerful speech regarding President Nixon and his possible impeachment for the Watergate Scandal. Throughout the speech, Jordan expressed her standpoint and reasoning as to why Nixon should be impeached. The main argument that Jordan presents in this speech is that the President should be impeached due to his actions that jeopardize the people of the United States and the Constitution. Barbara Jordan uses a great deal of effective language within her speech. I found her to be very eloquent and expressive when she spoke.
America’s Dream Vote Introduction The presidential election of 1968 was during a very heated time in American history. The race was between three candidates; Richard Nixon, Hubert Humphrey, and George Wallace. (U.S. History, 2017) All three candidates had different views on how they were going to handle being president which they displayed through their advertisements.
President Nixon is one of the most famous Presidents in American history for being the first one to resign from office. While Nixon is famous for doing such an unthinkable act, he is also the one that gave one of the best and most well known speeches in political history, The Checkers Speech. The speech was given by (Senator at the time) President Nixon when he was running for Vice President on General Eisenhower’s Presidential ticket. A newspaper, the New York Post, had a front page with the headline "Secret Rich Men's Trust Fund Keeps Nixon in Style Far Beyond His Salary"; the article alleged that people were donating to a secret fund that Nixon had for his personal benefit in trade for political favors.

People broke into the Watergate building to wiretap phones and steal secret documents. Nixon knew about the break in before hand and tried to cover it up. When people found out about him trying to cover it up, he decided to resign as president. He gave his speech on August 8th 1974 and resigned on the 9th.

This essay was originally published on September 19, 1796 in the Philadelphia Daily American Advertiser and then was republished in papers around the country.
Richard Nixon was walking straight outta Compton on October 31, 1969 going around dressed up as JFK. On April 10, 1962, steel companies raised the prices by 3.5 percent of their products. President John F. Kennedy had tried to maintain steel prices at a stable rate. President John F. Kennedy, known for his diligence and persuasion, held a news conference about the hikes in steel prices. President John F. Kennedy, in his speech, uses rhetorical strategies such as diction, emotional appeals, and a persuasive tone to convince Americans that steel companies are declining the standards to maintain stable prices. Kennedy states that the steel companies are a national problem due to the increase of steel prices.
The thirty seventh president’s tone throughout the speech was genuine and anguished. He stated frequently his regret towards his resignation; when this passage is read aloud, it is stressed heavily on pathos and that Nixon defended his decision with the selflessness of his own emotions and did what is better for the country (“American”). In his speech, Richard Nixon establishes his credibility and then goes on to show the logic of why he is resigning along with sparking the reader’s emotions in defense of him through the use of frequent fallacies and rhetorical devices. Nixon goes on to speak of his accomplishments and the tasks he hopes the American people will achieve with a new president, but those ideas are shadowed by the steady reminders by Nixon himself of the circumstances that are causing him to resign the Presidency that overall make Nixon’s arguments to logic and his credibility seem

Kennedy rises for the opportunity for persuasion after his inauguration has been addressed and he scarcely beats nixon.
