Present-Day Richard Wright What would Richard Wright write about if he was alive today? Well, Wright would write about many topics and issues dealing with racism today since he wrote about the racism that impacted his life during his time. Richard Wright was born after the Civil War but before the Civil Rights Movement. If Wright were writing an autobiography titled Black Boy (today in 2017) about a black boy growing up in the United States, he would write about police brutality on African Americans, how schools are more diverse than ever, and the first African American being elected as president. In Jerry Large’s article, “A New Era Begins: The Significance of the Barack Obama Victory, 2008,” Large argues that Barack Obama’s victory made new possibilities for the world. He claims that people in other countries see America differently now that an African American was elected as our president. He supports this claim by first examining Barack Obama’s remarkable characteristic, that he is black, that makes him significant. Then pointed out that America had the right collection of voters because Obama’s election signaled a deep change in American politics. And finally stating that Obama ran a smart, efficient campaign, and raised a record amount of money, but he was also the right person, running at the night time with the right electorate. Large’s purpose is to address readers that Barack Obama was going to make history the moment he was elected president. He establishes a victorious tone toward the audience to convince readers that Barack Obama will make history.
