Nationalism was the most important by-product of the War of 1812. We believe we were the strongest country in the world. We saw ourselves as a great country, if not the best. America gained more land and expanded their boundaries. The growth of nationalism continued to grow throughout America. The spoils system, the American System, the Market Revolution, agricultural achievements, the Mexican War, and Manifest Destiny progressed to the rise of nationalism. Jackson gave political positions to friends and people as a reward. In return, they would be loyal or support Jackson. This was known as the spoils system. The Southerners wanted Texas’ land which was then owned by the Mexicans. America fought Mexico in the Mexican War and was victorious. This allowed the growth and expansion of America. Once they had Texas, they went more West. This gave America more power as a whole and united them through the common goal of land ownership. Nationalism expanded through the country as the boundaries continued to grow. (pg. 268)
Manifest Destiny spread throughout the people of America. People believed that America was chosen by God to spread throughout the nation and be a great powerful country. This justified their reasons for expansion. The country grew and helped the sense of nationalism grow. The people started to believe they were invisible and becoming this super power of a country because of all the land they gained and continued to get.
