From 1800-1860 the United States experienced major political, economic and social changes that included the rise of the 2nd Two-Party System, Market Revolution/the American System, Rise of the Cotton Belt, the 2nd Great Awakening, Manifest Destiny as well as emerging concepts of democracy. The collapse of the Second Party System was a critical factor that lead to civil war. The impact of slavery also caused a great deal leading into the war. In many ways, the two-party system was beneficial for promoting the public good. However, it is also known for its disadvantages. The conflict of slavery split both major parties along sectional lines. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was over slavery. Missouri was above the 36 ’30-degree line beyond the Mississippi, which went against the precedent of no slavery in the area. The Mexican war promoted a decade long debate over the expansion of slavery into the newly acquired lands, which lead to the Compromise of 1850. Following the compromise of 1850, other tension arose. Thousands of settlers rushed into Kansas Territory. Kansas-Nebraska Act discussed how Kanas was north of the Missouri Compromise’s 36 ’30-degree boundary, but the south wanted it to be admitted as a slave state. Many historians would argue that the Civil War began with “Bleeding of Kansas”, which had two governments applying for statehood, Lecompton and Lawrence.
