Rob Bell argues that no one will spend eternity in hell because eventually God will save all people. From my perspective, I believe Mr. Bell is a “Universalist” which basically means he believes all people will eventually be saved through Christ. It took me a while to wrap my head around the idea of just anyone getting into heaven. I came to agree with Mr. Bell to a certain because its highly plausible that Hell is purgatorial with God sentencing unworthy people to Hell for a reformation. Now I believe God leaves this door open before and after death because that’s the type of almighty being we were taught about. The one who forgives all no matter the sins he/she has committed in their lifetime. In the Old Testament, there is not a Hebrew word for hell but there are references to death. Grave, pits death and Sheol are a bit vague with still giving an underworld feel. Within the New Testament the Greek word “Gehenna” is where the word Hell comes from. Gehenna in Jesus’s day was a dump. Bell makes a case about the description of Hell (fire, gnashing of teeth, and torment) are about the town garbage pile. He states the word Hell refers to the large amount of evil within our hearts that also causes chaos when we fail to live by God’s rules. Disobedience is highly disrespectful to God we can refer to Moses in the book of Numbers who was banned from the promised land due to being disobedient. God tasked he and Aaron to gather people around, speak to a rock and pour out its water in front of them. Moses instead disobeyed a direct order from God by hitting the rock instead of speaking to it, he took credit for the miracle and he committed such a sin in front of a crowd.
