I volunteered at Alternatives on December 1 from 10am-12:30pm in Robbie’s Room. There I assisted Logan, the director of Robbie’s Room, by cleaning the craft closet. We removed art boxes that were not used often and placed them in the shed. We also cleaned out what Alternatives calls “Birthday Kits.” These kits are donated and contain a birthday cake mix, icing, a toy, a coloring book, crayons, a toy and often bubbles. The kits have to be opened and everything removed and placed where it actually belongs—food is placed in the pantry, coloring books and toys in the craft closet, and the bubbles are confiscated because they are not allowed in the building. • Only emergency domestic violence shelter in Madison County. Threats: • Alternatives takes the approach that all other Domestic Violence Shelters and Homeless Shelters are not threats because they all have the same goal—each wants people to be safe and have a safe place to live o However, these different organizations often compete for grants and donations, which makes other shelters in Madison County and the surrounding area threats in this particular capacity. Recommendations: • I would argue the chain of command should be solidified so every employee knows his or her responsibility and whom they should contact about any issues that may arise. One of the employees I came in contact with expressed some confusion about who she should contact before completing a task and instead of discovering who that person was she just went ahead and completed the task without permission. • Creating a curriculum or a set tasks for volunteers, this would allow more people throughout the community to get involved with Alternatives, and it would also give Alternatives free labor to completed necessary
