Robert E Lee worked as a U.S. Army General he played an important role in the American Civil War as a general and as a West Point commandant. He mostly lead the Army of Northern Virginia throughout the war. He started leading the Army of Northern Virginia in June 1861. Some of General Lee’s famous battles and campaigns was of the battle of Fredericksburg in the December of 1862, the Peninsula Campaign within March through July of the same year, and his greatest success, the victorious battle of Gettysburg that was fought July 1’st through July 3’rd in 1863. Robert E Lee was born on January 19 1807, he was born in Stratford Hall Virginia. His father was Henry Lee III, and his mother was Henry’s second wife, Anne Hill Carter Lee. Lee got his education at the United States Military Academy Preparatory School, or the West Point Preparatory School. He acclaimed himself in the battles of Chapultepec, Veracruz, and Churubusco. He ended up lightly wounded in the war of Chapultepec and because of that he earned three brevets to colonel. His general, Winfield Scott, said that he was “the very best soldier that I ever saw in the field.” Soon enough, Lee was ranked as the superintendent of the West Point Preparatory School, in 1852. Afterwards, in 1855, Lee was appointed a lieutenant colonel to the freshly made Second Cavalry with the approval of Jefferson Davis. With his cavalry, Lee served a lot in West Texas. In October 1859 Lee was appointed general of a division of marines with Second Lieutenant J. E. B. Stuart. That year was the year of John Brown’s attack on the United States Arsenal and Armory at Harpers Ferry, and with Second Lieutenant Stuart they captured John and his
