Robert E. Lee: Hero In The Civil War

onfederate General Robert Edward Lee led southern Army against the Union Army. He was born on January 19, 1807, in Stratford Hall, Virginia. He felt like he had to live up to his family's legacy. His family consisted of a Chief justice of the United States, a president, and singers of the Declaration of Independence. Early on, Lee thought he was apart of his family’s greatness already. At 18, he enrolled at West Point Military Academy, where he put very hard thinking and work into. He was one of six cadets in his graduating class who finished without getting a demerit, and got perfect scores in artillery, infantry, and cavalry. He looked up to his dad Colonel Henry Lee, also known as “Light-Horse Harry”. He was a war hero in the Revolutionary War.

She was the great-granddaughter of George and Martha Washington. Lee and Mary had seven children, three sons and four daughters. Later in 1846, Lee got the chance he wanted his whole life and left to go to war with Mexico. He left Mary and the kids on her father’s plantation. When the U.S. won the war, Lee got praised by General Winfield Scott. He was held up as a war hero, Lee tried to look brave and smart. When that war was over, he went back home to the farm. However, he found it quite difficult to be away from the battlefield. Then, his father in law, Mary’s father past away. So, the property had fallen under hard times. Then for two years, he tried to make it profitable again. In 1859, Lee returned to the army at a very difficult position at a lonely cavalry outpost in Texas. Then in October Lee’s attack against John Brown at Harper’s Ferry, only lasted an hour. This put him on a list of names to lead the Union army if they go to war.
