“Boom, pow” you hear as a bullet whirl right past you almost striking your heart, your men jaunt among you, with friends and family you know and love. It is your fault and your duty if they die, you can be a hero, a coward, or a man slaughterer. This was the everyday life of General Robert E Lee, he was almost always in the life of battle, this gentleman was a gutsy leader and an extraordinary man. Lee has sacrificed his daily life for his wife and his country, he contributed to amazing jousting techniques, many say he is one of the best generals in the world. People say that he is a bad man just because he fought for the south, but he argues that he does not have any regard in the method of slavery, but he could not let his home down. He only decided to help the south because it was his home country and he could not let them down. Lincoln even gave him an offer to fight for the north but Lee refused because of his not wanting to fight against his home. Fighting in the war was a big risk and he had the courage to turn down the president which a lot of people would not have the courage to do so. It was never really about slavery but about not wanting to turn his back on his homeland. There is a quote that he made about his feelings about slavery that said “So far from engaging in a war to perpetuate slavery, I am rejoiced that slavery is abolished. I believe it will be greatly for the interests of the South. So fully am I satisfied of this, as regards Virginia especially, that I would cheerfully, have lost all I have lost by the war, and have suffered all I have suffered, to have this object attained”.
