The Killer Angels was a book about the Battle of Gettysburg, where the Southern states, or the rebels, fought against the Northern states, or the Federal Army. Joshua L. Chamberlain was the most important leader in the war with the best leadership. Robert E. Lee and John Buford also showed great leadership, but Joshua Chamberlain had the most impact on the war. John Buford knew how to pick very good ground which lead the union to winning the war, but he didn’t have the biggest impact. General Robert E. Lee was the main General and Commander for the Confederate Army. General Lee Controlled the entire part of the army that battled in the Battle of Gettysburg. Most of the men believe that General Robert E. Lee was the real reason that the Confederate Army lost the Civil War. George Pickett said “ That man destroyed my division”(Shaara 352). George was stating that General Lee destroyed his division and made them lose the battle. Most of the Army knew this plan was going to fail. They knew that if they attacked the center of the Union army they would lose. Lee just wouldn’t listen to them. Longstreet was talking to Lee about the plan and said “It is a distance over more than a mile. Over open ground. As soon as we leave the trees we will be under the fire of their artillery. From all over the field. At the top of the hill are Hancock’s boys…”(Shaara 292-293). Then after that Lee just ignored his theory and ordered him to do it leaving Longstreet know many good men will die. Chamberlain was the best leader in the book. He had great leadership skills such as, battle techniques and strategic skills. His contemporary individual was General Robert E. Lee. They thought alike, but in the end General Chamberlain won the battles. Together the battles decided who won the war. In the first battle the Union Army was out of ammunition on the hill so General Chamberlain decided to fight with hand to hand combat. “ Chamberlain raised his saber, let loose the shout that was the greatest sound he could make, boiling the yell up from his chest: Fix bayonets!
