Robert Frost was a popular and successful twentieth – century American poet who has had his work widely read and honored more than most other American poets of his time. His recognition as a poet is especially remarkable because his career as a writer did not attract any significant attention until he was nearly forty years old. He taught himself to write. Frost’s parents were descended from generations of New Englanders. Frost was born in San Francisco in 1874. His father passed in 1885 and his mother moved the family back to Massachusetts. In 1912 he sold everything and moved his family to England where after three years he was able to move back to the United States as a poet. Robert Frost died in 1963. It contains four stanzas and each stanza consists of five lines each. The poem is about nature but nature has a much deeper meaning in this poem. The entire poem has several lines of symbolism and is really referring about the journey of life and the decisions humans must make. The opening lines in the poem “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood” (lines 1, 2 and 3) the two roads the narrator is speaking about is the difficult choices we are faced with in life. The Yellow wood symbolizes one’s life. The speaker is alone and is sorry he could not travel both meaning he wants to have the option of doing both things but has to choose one or the other. In the line the narrator uses the word sorry suggesting he may have felt regret for the decision he may or may have not chosen. “Because it was grassy and wanted wear” (8) The path the narrator eventually chooses is overgrown from lack of use, representing a desire for individuality and risks against the more conventional, much-traveled road. “I doubted if I should ever come back.” (15) Most of our critical decisions in life cannot be un-done. We may try to have another plan but like the speaker, we realize, we most likely will not be coming back this way again.
