According to the Atomic Heritage Foundation, Robert J Oppenheimer was born on April 22, 1904 (Atomic). Julius Oppenheimer, his father worked in the textile business and was German immigrant (Atomic). Robert’s mother, Ella Friedman was from New York and aspired to be a painter (Atomic). According to the Institute for Advanced Study’s article on Oppenheimer, September of 1911, Robert enrolled in Ethical Culture School, he excelled in school, and it was obvious by the age of ten when he started studying minerals, physics and chemistry (IAS). At the end of his pre-tertiary education, he was the class of 1921’s valedictorian, however he became deathly ill and delayed enrollment at Harvard University (Atomic). Robert didn’t enroll at Harvard until a year later in 1922, where he graduated in three years (Atomic). While Oppenheimer majored in chemistry he soon realized his love for physics. Robert’s first task was to determine the amount of uranium needed to sustain a chain reaction (IAS). By July 16th, 1945 Oppenheimer was ready to test the first ever atomic bomb.
