The Amazing Works of Robert Joffrey Throughout his life, Robert Joffrey was a master of dance. Not only was he an extraordinary dancer, but he was also a choreographer, teacher and company director. His accomplishments have, and always will amaze audiences. According to the encyclopedia, The World Book Encyclopedia, “On December 24th, 1930, Robert Joffrey was born in Seattle, and died March 25th, 1988 in New York City” (Kathy Matheson 130). According to the encyclopedia, International Encyclopedia Of Dance: A Project Of Dance, “He was already on the faculties of the American Theater School and the High School of Preforming Arts in 1953 when he opened his own studio of the American Ballet Center; which continues to be the official school of the Joffrey Ballet”( Limarzi 609). Teaching students and making up choreography were some things at which he was brilliant. He brought new styles and steps to his students. Once his six dancers and Joffrey went on tour, the whole world saw what they could do. Throughout his time on tour, he never stopped learning. Improvement was always key in Joffrey’s mind. Not only did he take ballet, but he also took other dance forms such as tap, ballroom and jazz when he was younger. Having this diverse dance background helped Joffrey with mixing up his ballet moves. His unique choreography has always stretched the dance world boundaries. Some people are appalled with his sexual style of ballet while others applaud him for his work. He was not afraid to show his interpersonal style of dance.
