Robert Pickton was born on October 26th, 1949 in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada. He is well known for being a former pig farmer and famous serial killer who specifically hunted women prostitutes and drug users from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. “[P]olice found material on the farm linked to some of the missing women, including identification and an asthma inhaler” (O’Neil, 2002). Pickton was convicted of second-degree murder of six women and the deaths of twenty other additional women. “Despite the fact that there was evidence the police had ample information to raise a reasonable suspicion that Pickton was killing women as early as 2000, he was not arrested until February 2002” (Beaman, Lori, 2012). He was sentenced to the longest, most severe sentence under Canada’s law of murder; life in prison with no chance of parole for twenty five years in December, 2007 at Kent Institution in Agassiz B.C. The study showed how most offenders convicted in violent sexual crimes are most likely to have disabilities with intellectual skills. It was conducted over a number of inmates with sexual offence charges and linked them with intellectual issues. This relates to Pickton due to him constantly having issues in school until he finally dropped out. Pickton went through his elementary and most of his high school years with severe school failure, even when he was finally put into special education classes.
