Rockefeller. John D. Rockefeller gave back to the city in a big way; he created a whole complex that would in fact help the city flourish after the great depression. The Rockefeller Center complex has been giving back to the city for almost ninety years and has been great for the city of New York. It has been a center of entertainment and fun for families and people from all over. Rockefeller Center is a very important National Landmark throughout the country. John D. A few years after that in 1989, the organization fell on some harsh times, the family “sold 80 percent of their stake to a Japanese real estate company” (Building). When the Japanese company went bankrupt so did the Rockefellers, but luckily a few investors including David Rockefeller bought back the land claiming 100 percent ownership of the estate (Building). The years of 1999 and 2000 were big years for improving the complex. In 1999, the organization announced that they were turning their underground basement into a shopping center (Collins). They were going to make half a mile worth of shopping centers since it was not protected by the National Landmark because the committee thought it wasn’t worthy (Collins). After a few years and much work the basement or formerly known as the catacombs were fully renovated and functional. Also in the year 2000 the Rockefellers reopened the Top of the Rock Kasper
