In the year 1976, the world was rocked with a vicious, new form of satire. The genius Richard O’Brien introduced the film The Rocky Horror Picture Show. However, this piece of commentary was often looked upon as crude and overall distracting from the main purpose. The main purpose was to show the timeless view that the modern, reserved person shuts off all of their inner feelings to present a clean image; however, this clean image can be shaken by the simple introduction to a new world. Richard O’Brien displayed this new, erotic world filled with sex, drugs and a freed libido. Seeing as how this can been seen as a turning point in the plotline, it would only be fitting to view this in the score and the technical writing of the text. The entire theme has come into play at this point. Richard O’Brien’s purpose was to show the downside of suppressing our feelings. When she finally “gives herself over to absolute pleasure,” she lets everything go, no longer being able to be in control of her own actions. O’Brien started writing this piece in the early 60s (Champion). As the times went on, he looked around and viewed the times changing around him. He focused on how everyone reacted to the deterioration of moral values through the all American family and couple. His in-depth characterization of Janet Weiss is featured prominently in this song sequence. Her original outfit at the beginning of the film is a simple purple and white dress. As the storyline progresses, she ends up in a bra and slip. Throughout the process of the song, she tears part of her dress off to dress Rocky’s wounds. Rocky wears nothing but a gold Speedo and copious amounts of bronzer. The two interact with little to no clothes, showing her ‘stripping down’ into the new person she’s becoming.
