Lord of the Flies (1954), written by William Golding, helped me most to understand the complexity of the world. In the midst of an unnamed war, a plane carrying a group of British boys is shot down over a deserted island. The boys, without adult supervision, initially set up rules to govern themselves, but chaos takes over. Slowly, the boys descend into savagery. Jack and his hunters lose their sense of right and wrong and eventually murder Simon using their bare hands and teeth. Roger, one of Jack’s hunters, reveals his animalistic ways when he throws a rock at Piggy, causing him to fall off the cliff and sending him down to his death.
