Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804 in Salem Massachusetts as Nathaniel Hawthorne. Nathaniel added the “w” to his last name in his early 20’s in order to hide himself from his relationship to a magistrate named John Hathorne who did not apologize for his shameful involvement in the Salem witch trials. Hawthorne was also a descendant of a long line of puritan ancestors. Among these ancestors was William Hathorne who was among the first puritan settlers to arrive in New England in 1603. Hawthorne was raised by his mother and her family when his father died from yellow fever when Hawthorne was around four years old.

Hawthorne had a relatively isolated childhood because his mother was overprotective and persuaded him to do activities that were very secluded. This caused Hawthrone to be shy and secluded person all his life. His acceptance to Bowdoin college caused him to begin his writing. Once Hawthorne's graduation in 1825 he got serious about his writing and was able to publish his first novel Fanshawe .This novel was unsuccessful and later i life he tried to forget about this writing. Luckily by the time hawthorne was fired his writing made a substantial income. He then married Sophia Peabody who was the sister of one of his older girlfriends and a introvert because she suffered from constant migranes. They moved to The Manse in Concord. This is where they meet Ralph Waldo Emerson. In 1845 Hawthorne and Peabody moved back to Salem where Hawthorne had been appointed Surveyor of the Boston Custom House.
