Could you imagine a world in the future where most of the Earth is a barren wasteland, the English language has changed, where there’s little to no technology, and people have gone back to the ways of an old western cowboy like town? Well that’s exactly what the world Stephen King had created for The Dark Tower series.The main protagonist of every book is Roland Deschain. Roland is the only gunslinger left alive and it is his duty, as a gunslinger, to search for the Tower. In the book The Drawing of The Three, the second book of The Dark Tower series, Roland has a deck of magic cards that shuffle and show him who will be accompanying him along his journey. This group is called Roland’s Ka-tet. Roland and his Ka-tet face many dangers and conflicts throughout the story, but the most important conflicts are Roland’s sickness, Eddie’s addiction and drug related issues, and Odetta’s split personality.

The first major conflict has to deal with the story’s main character, Roland. Roland is a tough, witty, and blunt. He is the last gunslinger on the hunt for the Tower. This first conflict that arises in the book is Roland’s sickness and infection that starts at the beginning of the book. It is caused by a series of misfortunate events happening for Roland. These events had first started off when Roland had woken up in the water, dazed and confused from having blacked out earlier. This had wetted his guns and bullets which had left him vulnerable to the danger he would soon have to face, the lobstrosities. Eddie Dean is a drug addict from New York who Roland meets through the first door. Eddie has been clean for almost a month so he is going through withdrawal from not using heroin, which his brother had gotten him deeply addicted to. This brings him into trouble as he’s on an airplane smuggling drugs into New York so that he may save his brother and get himself some money to get drugs. This brings him into trouble because as he’s on the plane he was found out for having drugs on him. This is where the Gunslinger is forced to help him get out of the situation by opening the door between their worlds and taking his drugs into his world so he may pass inspections. After he passes inspections and leaves the airport, he is picked up by two guys in a van and taken to Balazar to deliver the package he does not have. This causes a problem for Eddie because in order to get the “fix” he needs, he must deliver the package. Therefore, he goes through very bad withdrawal and by the time he get to Balazar’s place, he is a pale white and shaking. It is found out that he does not have the package, so Roland must come to his world to help him. There is a giant gunfight and Eddie must leave his world to Roland’s but this also means giving up his drug addiction. This choice is moreso forced on him as Roland shoves him through and slams the door shut. This creates a huge problem for Eddie because he is still addicted
