Role Models: Yoda, Batman, And The Way

There are three fictional characters that I would consider my role models, Junzi,when I was growing up. The first character I consider my role model is Yoda, one who lives his life by “The Way”. The second character is Batman, one who is not motivated by personal gain. The third character is T’Challa, the Black Panther, one who is an advocate for filial piety and ritual. Many Confucian traits are integral to the core development of personality for Yoda, Batman, and the Black Panther. Yoda is a nine-hundred year old, small, green guy who exemplifies what it means to live by Dao, the way. Xiao, filial piety, is an extremely important virtue to the Black Panther. T’Challa exemplifies this through his devotion, love and reverence for his father. In fact, T’Challa lives his life to honor his father and when T’Chaka, T’Challa’s father, dies T’Challa is guided by rectifying the wrong that was the murder of his father. Furthermore, when T’Challa finds out that his father killed his own brother and abandoned T’Challa’s cousin in America, T’Challa tries to right the wrongs of his father and gives his cousin his right as Wakandan royalty to challenge him for the throne. This shows that T’Challa values what is right, giving his cousin the right he deserves, over what is selfish, keeping the throne and exiling his cousin. T’Challa holds filial piety and what is right above his own gains and, therefore, is an exemplar of Confucian values and a Junzi. In addition, T’Challa is a champion of Confucian Virtue as he is the Wakandan King that, finally, shared Wakanda’s advanced technology with the world to help the disenfranchised.
