The novel ‘Frankenstein’ follows the story of Victor Frankenstein and his creation of the unnamed monster. During the novel we see Victor use parts from old corpses to create a body for the monster. This could be understood as the monster being composed of the past to create something new. The question now is do engineers have obligations to the past as well as the future? Now engineers do have an obligation to the past and the future. We can take Victor as an example as we saw he had used parts from the corpses to create an amalgamation that resulted in something entirely new. One could say that without the corpses he wouldn’t have been able to create the monster. This could be said for engineers as well. Most of the inventions are created with the help of the old ones. There’s another point that could be made concerning Frankenstein’s monster is that as we are gradually progressing with the story we see development with the monster as well whether it gradually learning its surroundings or learning a new language like through another person like Safie. This could also be said about inventions that engineers create. The smartphone is also developed similarly way with the help of other inventions the smartphones also develop with it. For example, the touchscreen was originally used for the use of computing or looking at photographs on a camera. But then they were later implanted on Mobile Phones. Something Victor should’ve done was think about what would happen if the process of reanimating would bring. If he wasn’t so blinded by his ambition, he might’ve seen the ways it could go wrong as well. This is why engineers have to think about the future as well.
