Providing counseling and crisis intervention: School counselors provide counseling to students struggling with emotional or mental health issues and help them manage crises such as family problems, substance abuse, and suicidal thoughts. Collaborating with parents and teachers: School counselors work closely with parents, teachers, and other school staff to identify and address the needs of students. They may provide consultation, training, and support to parents and teachers to help them better understand and respond to students' needs. Advocating for students: School counselors advocate for students' rights and interests, and work to create a safe and supportive school environment that promotes academic success and emotional well-being. One instance that stands out is when a student came to her expressing suicidal ideations. She immediately ensured that the student was in a safe environment and conducted a risk assessment. She then engaged the student in a conversation about their feelings and concerns, validating their emotions and offering support. Zenovia listened actively and helped the student identify coping strategies and resources, including a referral to the school's mental health services.
Staying up to date with the latest resources and information on college and career readiness is essential to her role as a counselor. Ms. Hogue as many in the educational field attends professional development opportunities offered by the school district and participate in various trainings and conferences organized by professional organizations such as the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). She also regularly reads academic journals, participates in online forums and communities, and networks with colleagues to share knowledge and best practices.
