Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry by Mildred D. Taylor is set in 1930’s Mississippi. At this time there is a lot of racial injustice as we follow a black, landowning family as they try to forge their path in black history. Three examples of prejudice are the burnings, the Logan’s bank calling up their mortgage, and the instances with Tj in Strawberry. The burnings were an example of racial injustice because burning a human being because of a rumor goes against all right that we have. The three Berrys were burned only because they were accused of flirting with a white woman. This was, number one a rumor, so they didn’t even take time to verify if it was true or not. Number two under no circumstances should a man just go out and burn another man to death. This was the first burning in the text, but everyone was scared of the Wallaces for what they had done before. The burning was an act of racial prejudice was not necessary. The next example of racial injustice is the Logan family’s bank calling up the mortgage for no absolute reason. It was not directly stated in the book, but there was no reason other than out of hatred to call up a mortgage that had four years left on it. and Melvin. This is an injustice because R.W. and Melvin use Tj as a person to blame when they steal something or hurt someone. The biggest example of this is the pearl-handled pistol. R.W. and Melvin use that as bait to get Tj to come along so they can steal a lot more stuff, and they eventually end up killing Mr. Barnett and hurting his wife.
