In the novel, Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry, several characters have persevered through injustice, hardships, and extreme racism. For example, Mama, Papa, Big Ma, in regards to the land In the early chapters Mr. Granger wants the land back, through all of this they preserve past him despite the obstacles Harlan Provides.Also, When the boycott of Mama and Papa happens, Harlan Granger fires mama and makes it harder to keep the land but they preserve anyway. And when the Wallaces shoot papa and he cannot go to work at the railroad, That makes it even harder for them to get an income and pay their rent so Mama and Big Ma have to find a way to make more money.Even Hammer sells His car and a few more things to help pay off the Logan family Mortgage. …show more content…

Even though he was discriminated he preserved and kept his land for him and his upcoming family. Even After Paul Edward passed away, Caroline Logan (Big Ma) kept that land for The logans even when Harlan Granger tried to get back the land they had bought. Caroline even sighed the land over to David(Papa) and Hammer (Uncle Hammer) when she feared Harlan would try to Finagle the land away from them. This is an example of perseverance because, though coloured people weren’t supposed to own their own land, Paul Edward would work very hard to afford the land for his future family, even when at the time there was a very big issue with poverty and not being very financially stable. This is because of the Great Depression, a ten-year period in which the stock market had crashed, so many americans lost their jobs and had to spare what little they had for the greater-good of their families. Not only did the Logans have it much better than so many people at the time, they were coloured and that made people begin to grow an even bigger resentment towards them. Even through this they keep working as hard as ever. Another group of people who had a lot of courage was The entire coloured community. Throughout the entire book Coloured folk get discriminated and bashed because the colour of their skin. Mr. Tatum stands up to Mr Barnett when he tries to cheat him on selling goods, he ends up getting ‘Tarred and feathered’ because he called Mr Barnett a liar, not to mention, Mr and Mrs Berry are still trying despite the wallaces setting their house Ablaze, seriously injured Mr berry and killed one of the two nephews involved,and The Averys have to deal with their son (T.J) and the community attempting to lynch him for a crime he didn’t
