The historical fiction book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by author Mildred D. Taylor takes place in a town in Mississippi in 1933 during a time when segregation and racism was still at large. Cassie Logan and her friends and family are constantly fighting the day to day injustice and their ability to keep their family’s land. During these tough times they are forced to protect themselves from every little thing. Along with that they also face constant dangers with white people who believe they are superior to them and treat them horribly and unfairly. This in turn makes living very hard for them. Mr.Barnett flat out ignored them and served other (white) customers first . And when Cassie spoke up Mr.Barnett lashed out, yelling and screaming at them. To continue on that, it says on page 11 Mr.Barnett yells “Well, you just get your little black self over there and wait some more.'' This quote shows the theme by showing how some white people saw themselves as better and that black people didn't deserve equal treatment or justice. It also shows how they had to be forced to back down to something that wasn’t their fault. The last piece of evidence for the theme would be when Cassie was forced to apologize to Lilean Jean when they accidentally bumped into each other at Strawberry. Even though it wasn't intentional, both Lilean Jean and her father, Mr.Simms, both got mad at Cassie, forcing her to say that Cassie was sorry for doing it. This made Big Ma have to step in and in order to protect Cassie, made her apologize anyway. Mr.Simms stated that: “When my gal Lilean Jean says for you to get yo’self off the sidewalk, you get, you hear?” (114) this supports my theme by proving how they treated her has an impact, because later on it said she ran away crying.
