Today I will be talking about the Celts; you will learn most of what you know is wrong. We will be covering fourmain topics the culture, common myths, headhunting, and the Roman invasion. One interesting fact us the word Celt comes from the Greek word Keltoi, which means barbarians, and is properly pronounced with as Keltic not as Seltic. Nobody called The Celtic people Celts until the 18th century, before they were called the Britons.
The Celts are commonly misconceived as one people, where they were actually many warring tribes. The main things we declare “Celtic”; The Art, Hill Forts, Jewelry, Language, and Weapons are mainly Political, Religious, and Military artifacts, rather than their culture. The Celts did not run into battle naked with a torc, this was propaganda from the Romans. They even used leather, metal plates, and chainmail for armor. The Germanic Celts had a very large gold mining operation. This was a surprise to the romans when they invaded them as they thought the gold had come from trade.
They also hunted heads, as they believed many living things had gods in the, (i.e. Rocks, Streams, Oak Trees) the human head was no exception. They believed that their soul lived in the head, and taking one of a mortal enemy gave them bragging rights. (i.e. I have a giant golden Musk Deer statute) For the most distinguished heads the embalmed them in cedar oil and put them in a chest, then proudly showed them to guests, bragging that they, or some family member, refused a large sum of money for it. In 42 B.C.E The Roman Empire invaded Britain. The British Tribes originally opposed the Romans, but by 84, The Romans had completely conquered Southern Britain and moved into Southern Scotland. They fortified the border with Scotland with Hadrian’s Wall in 122 B.C.E. Then, 142 B.C.E the Romans pushed north again and began construction of the Antonine Wall, but they retreated back to Hadrian's Wall after only twenty years when they had failed. Although the native Britons mostly kept their land, they were subject to the Roman governors, which they were forced to pay taxes
