Each and every country that exists today has had its own beginning. Rome was originally founded in 753 BC, and was first ruled by a monarchy; which was then replaced by a republic. Republic originally comes from a Latin word that means public matters, or matters of the state. The Roman Republic was very successful and triumphant, for it ruled from 510 BC until 23 BC, which was almost 500 years in total. After that, it finally settled into becoming an Empire. Rome was originally only a small Italian city, but then as it grew; it took over the entire Mediterranean area. Windows were not common in Roman interiors; instead they had small openings in the ceiling to allow sunlight and air. As Romans took the opportunity to find whatever they can in the interior space and create elegant decorative masterpieces, and so they did. Their doors were also sumptuously decorated with artistic treatment, for they were carefully paneled and carved, or were creatively decorated with bronze items. The Romans also took after the Greek architects by having similar interior plans for the dwellings for they used fresco and stucco. Back in the days, stucco was originally made into rectangular shaped panels, painted with deep dark colours. In between these panels there existed an artwork of some kind, simply for decorative reasons. Basically, the whole wall was lavishly decorated with elaborate paintings of people, portraits, landscapes and so on. Then they began adding artworks made by marble, as marble was exquisitely and widely used in Rome. They used marble to create astonishing effects by changing the tone of colour and tints. Finally, they began using gold, silver, bronze and mosaic. They had large blank walls that were very decorated to create an illusion of a larger interior space. The interior consisted of peristyles, atrium, gardens and fountains all in an exquisite way to show a decorative touch. Their floors commonly had mosaic or geometric patterns, and they used colours of the nature of the earth since they found them the most vivid and lively colours to be used. The difference that strikes between Greek designers and the Romans were that the Romans had the tendency to use silver, gold, marble, and bronze more in their furniture and had a more complex design in general.
