The Roman empire was a prosperous empire that flourished between the years 27 BC - 476 AD. However, there were many internal and external factors that contributed to the fall of the Roman empire. Some internal factors that contributed to the fall of the Roman empire included their financial strains, and the people starting to distrust each other. Some external factors that contributed to the downfall of the Roman empire include constant pressure from the northern world, and Rome’s army not being able to compete with other armies.
WT Notebook Journal 2 During the period of the Early Empire, Roman expansion and change marked the end of the Roman Republic. Growth changed the ideal of the republic and new problems surfaced within Rome itself. Increase power in the Senate which led to a less democratic society and increase military power for the Greeks as well as civil wars between Rome and the provinces were some of the political changes that were prompted by Roman expansion. Socio-economical changes like high taxes due to the wars and movement towards cities, increase unemployment, and income disparity caused by the dispute between patricians and the plebeian were promoted by Roman expansion.
As a Roman citizen, watching the decline of the Roman Empire was frightening because of the constant worry. The Roman Empire lost its power due to simultaneous external and internal factors such as the lack of political stability, deterioration of the military, and constant invasions from outsiders. The first internal factor that led to the fall of the Roman Empire was the lack of political stability. This was due to the constant change of emperors, causing haphazard leadership. “The soldiers in various parts of the empire proclaimed fifty emperors in about the same number of years” (Lines 8-10, Document 3a, Third Century Crisis of the Roman Empire).
The Roman empire was based on slavery: slavery on a massive scale. Therefore The success and spoils of Roman wars meant that slaves were everywhere putting regular Roman citizens out of work. This solution was not ideal but no rich Romans (patricians) seemed willing to compromise and give up their slaves. Attempts were made to base taxes on the numbers of slaves owned but the rich simply freed their slaves to avoid taxation and then added on still to the numbers of unemployed.
1600 years ago the mediterranean people were doing the same thing that us modern day people are doing now, conquering, claiming, and fighting, but why were they doing this, and who were they doing it too? The Roman empire was one of the strongest empires in history, the “superpower of the Mediterranean world”. In 750 BCE Rome was founded and over time Rome’s wealth, territory, and popularity grew and grew as time went on. They conquered the land of Scotland and Spain, began to control the whole Mediterranean sea, established some colonies around North Africa, the middle east, Asia Minor, and Egypt. They were beginning to expand their empire into almost the entire continents of Asia, Europe, and Africa.
There were many different causes for the fall of the Roman empire, not just one. The Roman Empire was very strong, but eventually broke down over time for a multitude of reasons. Most of those reasons had to do with changes in Rome’s identity. Some of these changes in Rome’s identity led to the fall of Rome because they were so sudden; only portions of the Roman population were prepared for the change. Other times, citizens got into arguments because they were, in a way, too prepared.
The year 27 BCE marked the start of the Pax Romana, the height of the Roman Empire. Rome had a series of good emperors, and everything was well until 180 CE, when this period of peace ended. A few hundred years later, in 476 CE, the Western Roman Empire fell once and for all. The fall of the Roman Empire was caused by a combination of powerful enemies, geographical challenges, and most importantly, political instability. These factors weakened the Empire’s power and eventually led to its downfall.
The Roman toga originated or first started with the Etruscans which was a square woollen fabric that was folded draped and wrapped around the body, it was mainly worn by prominent Roman men during the Republic and Early Empire The toga was not pleasant to wear as it was heavy and hard to move in, it was worn by citizens only on formal public events (Tortora & Marketti, 2015). Throughout the years the Toga evolved into many other types and colours, they were all wore for different purposes including mourning and for politicitians. During the 2nd century BC toga was worn by both men and women, there was no distinction of social classes, later women were not allowed to wear the toga and were referred to as prostitutes when they were seen wearing
The challenged that I believed that remained for the Roman Empire was the army and defense and religion and morality. One of the main challenges that stayed was the northern frontier. Because of the German tribal leader Herrmann ambushed and destroyed the three Roman legions made Augustus abandon the campaign. This left a problem of border defense that bedeviled his successors. Even though Augustus had 300,000 men, it was barely enough to hold the line from the barbarians.
Maximinus I. The organization of these four chapters emphasizes the structural conformity of the treated emperors, less in the similarity of their policies than in the comparability of the political problems of the time. To Gibbon it was clear that, despite apparent differences, the Roman policy of that era was fraught with the Romans
During the Roman Republic and Roman Empire, women were restricted to domestic life in a male-dominated society. Egypt’s capital, Alexandria, formally passed into Roman rule in 80BC , and was the greatest of the Roman provincial capitals, with a population of 300,000. In comparison, the Italian city of Pompeii had a population of only 20,000. To examine the role of women in Roman society, I will need to investigate the literature that survived from the period. This essay will compare and contrast the role of women in Alexandria and Pompeii.
The fall of the Roman Empire shattered Europe into what it is today. Europe has been a fragmented group of countries since. Today there are financial problems, the poorer countries want loans from the richer European countries in the European Union but never repay them back. Adding to that there is an Immigration problem of refugees in Syria crossing over to Germany. The economy isn’t just affecting their own countries, but also affect other countries based off exporting goods like China.
The causes of the wars were brutal. Five hundred thousand Carthaginians were forced into slavery. The influx of people brought up Rome’s population dramatically. This could be seen as a good thing, but sadly, this is what helped bring down Rome. There was more diversity in the empire because Rome had succeeded in expanding as much as it could.
The legendary Roman Empire lasted from 753 B.C.E. all the way until 1453 A.D. However Rome split in two at about 395 A.D. which crippled the ancient Rome we know. So really ancient Rome lived from 753 B.C.E. to 476 A.D. But the name of Rome continued on in the Byzantine empire for about another 1000 years. Yet many people nowadays still refer to Rome as one of the greatest ancient civilizations of all time.
Ancient Rome had a well organized government that had many purposes that helped them create an amazing civilization. I studied 5 difference purposes of government to learn more about Ancient Rome. Those were the following: public services, protect rights, rule of law, prepare for a common defense, and support the economic system. The Roman Republic had amazing features.
