Romanticisation of mental health issues Sometimes the opposite of stigmatisation can occur and people end up seeing the characteristics of a mental illness as desirable due to what they have seen online. Whilst it can be really good to see more people talking about mental health issues, caution needs to be exercised when it comes to what people are looking at. This is because there is the issue of the romanticisation of mental illness which can lead to people turning to self destructive behaviours as it is seen as desirable and beautiful, this is something that is a rather large issue on sites like tumblr. A study of 17 different tumblr accounts that focus on depression related content by Cavazos-Rehg (2016), entitled ‘ An analysis of depression, self-harm, and suicidal ideation content on tumblr’, revealed the sort of content that was posted on these accounts in the space of a month. Across all of the tumblr blogs observed by Cavazos-Rehg (2016), it was found that only around 8% of the posts were there to provide comfort or support, often this came from the interactive posts, such as ‘asks’ on blogs - 47% of the posts were interactive posts. Worryingly, it was found that 25% of advice offered could be very harmful, for example how to secretly engage in self harming behaviours; this could have an extremely damaging effect on the young people viewing this. These often glamourise depression and paint it as something out of a tv show or movie, which can be very harmful for young people as they won’t receive help for the problems they're having, and could engage in self-destructive behaviours to try and be like the people they are seeing
