Liberalism and Romanticism and How They Came To Be Alive Compared to today, the industrial revolution was hell. The cities were overcrowded, polluted, and had horrible working conditions, even for women and children. It was not uncommon for people die early or for them to up having serious and permanent health conditions. But the revolution did have its benefits, like bring in new inventions, more money for the country, and a bigger populations. That is probably why new ideas came to light in those dark times, like: Liberalism and Romanticism. Liberalism was the belief that people should be free do what they wanted and still have the government’s protection. Romanticism is about seeing the beauty of nature and in individual people. Those who liked liberalism used it as a reason to do what they wanted while working the factories or to even leave the factories all together. Romantics wanted to bring the countryside back into the cities that were full of people too used to stone and smog, and to show how complicated a human being really was. They brought back the medieval gothic architecture, and used it to create neo-gothic castles in the countryside, and cathedrals in the cities. The types of stories also changed. For example Walter Scott’s novel about a medieval knight named Ivanhoe that was a hero during Saxon and Norman raids; it gave the audience not only a romantic protagonist, but also a history lesson that they might not have otherwise known because they weren’t educated. The heroes of these romantic novels often when on adventures for revenge or love, but typically died at the end. There also came a new literature genre called Gothic Literature.
