Document 10 takes a painting called Rain, Steam, and Speed - The Great Western Railways by J. M. W, Turner , which portrays the railroad, as we can easily tell from the title. Railroads were a turning point in the Industrial Revolution, an era that was taking place at the same time of the Romantic era. Artists are often influenced by the life that is occurring around them, evident in this painting because Turner depicted a railroad. However, just from the painting, the scene’s subject or purpose was not obvious. By using only blurs of color, Turner allowed audiences to use their own imagination to produce an image and develop their own thoughts.
During the period from 1760’s to the 1910’s, the European intellectual viewpoints have evolved over time starting with the Enlightenment, which sparked in the French Revolution. Equality and education became very important to the Europeans along with theories on human behavior and reason. Winding time forward, Romanticism was a movement in the arts and literature that emphasized passion, emotion of the individual, and admiration of nature. This praising of the individual transitioned to imperialism era, which was the colonization by the European powers, USA, and Empire of Japan. Every nation was in a competition to take over the natives’ land first.
The word “Romantic” was associated with feeling and beauty. Any mood, good or bad, could be conveyed in a Romantic stylized painting. This Romantic style called for a “return to nature... a belief in the goodness of humanity, the promotion of justice for all, and a strong belief in the senses and emotions, rather than reason and intellect”. It could portray figures or even a beautiful landscape. Romantic art can usually be spotted by its seen brush strokes.
Romanticism, as told by Gene W. Ruoff, “often features an organic conception of individual life, society, and the interconnections of humanity, nature, and divinity” (Ruoff, Gene W. "Romanticism." Scholastic GO!”, basically meaning artists of this time valued individualism in their works. Individualism encouraged being oneself during a new era, to push for changes and create the world everyone wanted to have. While individualism was undoubtedly a good thing, the other part of the romantic era was wary of science, and heavily contradicted the Enlightenment Era. People didn’t like what they couldn’t understand and new creations/evolutions in science became scary when they realized they couldn’t understand it.

Dark Romanticism evolves from works of the Romantic Period (1798-1870) with characteristics of horror fiction and death. It is taken as a reaction of the Transcendental Movement, which originated abreast the Romantic Period from 1830 to 1860. Known writers like Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, and Nathaniel Hawthorne found that the ideas displayed in the Transcendental works were idealistic and rose-colored, as a result, they opt to alter these works adding their own element hence this was the birth of the subgenre.
