Last weekend I went to visit my one of my friends, who recently got a teaching job, in Rome, Georgia. Since there was nothing to do while in the small town I decided to head over to the museum to waste sometime and have something for my cultural event paper. I went on a tour and informational guide about Rome. The museum was called the Rome Area History Museum. The tour was sponsored by the Rome chamber of commerce and the tour lasted for 30-40 minutes. Rome is the biggest city in Northwest Georgia, which is not saying much, but it started out as a mill town. It was once inhabited by mound builders then the Creek and Cherokee tribes came after. But the Indians, who build a capital in New Echota, had a large settlement in the area stretching all the way to Dahlonega, Georgia and more. By the 1800s the Indians were being forcibly removed from their lands across the United Stated with the settlements around Rome following the trend. The Creek tribe was moved around the 1820s and the Cherokee were moved in 1838. The city has a big cemetery located on one of the 7 hills in the area called Myrtle Hill Cemetery. It hosts burials of mostly confederate soldiers from the area and a few union soldiers. The cemetery also houses the actually body of the original tomb of the unknown soldiers, who has now been given a name. Just as the town began the Industrial Revolution the mill workers all lived near the mill which now the mill is no more. Strikes and violence occurred when Black families tried to move into the area. Little by little as each Black family moved in to work at the mill a white family would move out to find another place to live and work. Now it is home to the poorest sector of the town. South Rome is
