The Greek civilization was very similar to the Roman Republic. The Roman Republic and Greece both had similar political systems, economies, religions, social orders, technologies, and arts. The systems used by both the Roman and the Greeks were not only different from the rest of the world, but also redefined how civilizations should be run. Both of these civilizations have changed the way the world is today and have influenced how countries today function. These are two similar civilizations that were very different from other civilizations and have changed the civilizations of today.

The Greeks were polytheistic just like the Romans. They had gods that explained almost every natural phenomenon. They had 12 important gods, called the 12 Olympians. The gods the civilizations had were essentially the same, however they had different names. Both civilizations depicted the gods as divine in form. The gods were not always depicted as perfect beings. Many of the gods were selfish or did things that we would frown upon. Most of the gods fought with other gods or used their powers to torment mortals. Most people were afraid that the gods would hurt them, which made them constantly pay respect or make sacrifices to the gods. If a mortal disrespected a god, he could be severely punished. An example of this is the story of Sisyphus. He disrespected Zeus, the king of the gods, so he was forced to roll a boulder up a hill, only to have it roll down again. Sculptures and paintings were made that depicted the gods or everyday life. Both the Greeks and Romans made elaborate and beautiful statues, paintings, and mosaics. Statues would be placed as decoration in houses, paintings and murals would be put in homes and on buildings and signs. Mosaics were used inside of pools and baths, as well as on walls, ceilings, and floors for a fancier look. Primarily, the wealthy put art in their houses for decorations. In addition to statues, paintings, and mosaics, the Greeks and Romans made jugs and vases with various artwork on the outside. These pots were used for storing wine, decoration, or even for storing a person’s ashes. Theses different art pieces also were sold to people, which helped the economy. The arts were important to Greece and Rome for the economy, but also for the creativity of the art
