Act 1 Short Answer Questions In the famous play Romeo and Juliet, the first act contains many literary devices to spike the reader's interest or curiosity. One literary device Shakespeare skillfully uses is dramatic irony, which he uses in the scene where Romeo first spots Juliet. Shakespeare uses dramatic irony to create a suspenseful feeling in the scene which draws interest from the audience. When Romeo and Juliet had their romantic moment they didn’t know each other's identity and we know this because the text states: “My only love sprung from my only hate!/Too early seen unknown, and known too late!” (1.5.152-153). One conflict that Shakespeare creates is Tybalt’s driving hate toward the Montagues. Tybalt is Juliet’s cousin that has a driving hate towards the Montagues and one example of it is in the first scene where he tries to start a fight. Tybalt isn’t a big enough figure to cause too much attention in public which allows him to cause ruckus with ease. This can make it hard for Romeo to pursue his love for Juliet and this affects the plot but can also open new scenes because Tybalt can act as an obstacle making Romeo unable to go that path. These characters like Tybalt can help get the story into a certain scene that can keep the audience’s attention. The main conflict Shakespeare creates is the conflict between the Montagues and Capulets which sets the main plot of the story. The Montagues and Capulets are families that have driving hate toward each other but anyone in the family including servants is dragged into this conflict. Romeo and Juliet is part of the group that is dragged into their family’s conflict. Romeo is a person that pursues true love wherever he finds it which makes his family’s conflict a problem because his true love happens to be in the Capulets family. Firstly, in the first act, we already learn about the big conflict between the two families and their hate towards each other, especially their parents. The fight in the first scene has the prince saying that if the two families continue fighting and causing trouble in the streets he would execute them and the relationship between Romeo and Juliet would definitely cause a fight. Secondly, Juliet’s family already has someone that they want Juliet to marry which is Paris, and he loves Juliet with a passion. This makes it hard for both parties to even start a relationship or even see each other which proves to be not a big deal for Romeo in act two since he jumped over the orchard wall that led to the iconic balcony scene. Lastly, in the first act we see Romeo fall for Juliet at first sight but before that he was in love with Rosaline but he just dropped her and moved to Juliet. This proves that Romeo can easily move from one girl to another and would be more convenient for Romeo given his and Juliet’s situation. These three reasons make it reasonable to say that this relationship is nearly impossible given the situations on both
