The last scene starts with Romeo wandering the streets of Mantua, thinking about a dream he had the night before where Juliet was dead. Then, he gets a message from his friend, Balthasar saying that Juliet is dead. Upon hearing this news, Romeo is devastated and wants to kill himself. Before he leaves Mantua, Romeo buys some poison from an Apothecary and rushes to Verona. Back in Verona, Friar John was supposed to deliver the letter to Romeo telling him about the plan, but many people believed that Friar John had the plague, so they would not let him in. Since he did not deliver the news to Romeo, he apologizes to Friar Laurence for his inability to complete the task. He believes that Romeo has come to violate Juliet's corpse. Their argument turns into a sword fight, and Romeo kills Paris. Romeo opens the tomb and there he finds Juliet's body. Thinking Juliet is actually dead, Romeo looks at Juliet’s face and is devastated. He sits next to his love and drinks the poison, kisses her, and then dies. Meanwhile, Friar Laurence arrives at the Capulet tomb to find Paris’s body lying there. As planned, the potion wears off and Juliet awakens in the tomb, finding Romeo's dead body beside her. When she sees the poison, she realizes what has happened. She kisses Romeo hoping that the poison will kill her as well, but it does not work. Friar Laurence begs Juliet to exit the vault and run away, but she chooses to kill herself with Romeo’s dagger because she wanted to die with him. Soon after, Prince Escalus arrives, accompanied by the people of Verona. Lord Montague announces that Lady Montague has died from a broken heart as a result of Romeo's banishment. Friar Laurence then explains what has happened to Romeo and Juliet, and Balthasar gives the Prince the letter from Romeo, which confirms what Friar is
