A small spark can ignite a fire. In the play, Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet face multiple challenges. The main reason for their adversity is due to the small character, Paris. The minimal interaction between him and Juliet ended up having big effects. Paris only appears briefly, but his presence plays a significant role, especially because he influences the actions and consequences that Romeo and Juliet face. Paris is the reason why Juliet took such extreme measures. Juliet’s mother tells her that she will marry “County Paris,” and he will make her “a joyful bride,” (3.5.17-18). She tells the friar that she has “the strength of will to slay [herself],” to get out of marrying Paris (4.1.73). Juliet would rather die than be in an arrangement with the County. This extreme action she is taking is all because of Paris. The friar and her produce a plan where she will drink sleeping poison so she can avoid the wedding and end up with Romeo. Juliet makes major and dangerous plans solely because of Paris. Juliet and Romeo’s sudden death is caused by the minorities of Paris. Juliet successfully avoided her marriage, however, her plan started to fall apart. When Romeo gets misinformed that Juliet is dead, he goes to see her and comes “arm’d against [himself],” to die with her (5.3.65). Romeo kills himself in the vault with Juliet. Getting away from Paris to be with Romeo, is what ended up killing him instead. Had Juliet’s parents not forced her to be wed in Paris, she wouldn’t have had to do what she did. When Juliet eventually wakes up, she “snatches Romeo’s dagger,” and “stabs herself,” (5.3.175,176). She kills herself after she finds Romeo has slain himself.
