“Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.” This quote by Martin Luther King Jr. enforces the idea that love is a force for good. The story “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry, and the poems Romeo and Juliet and “Sonnet 116 by William Shakespeare back this up as well. Love is a force for good since it helps people in hard times, brings out the best in humanity, and true love in the purest sense, never ends.
True love between two people is very pure and never ends. It continues throughout their lives and makes each person’s life feel meaningful when they have that other person loving them so much. William Shakespeare agrees with this as well. In “Sonnet 116”, he calls true love “an ever fixed mark.” The ever fixed mark means that true love never moves from it’s mark or it never moves on from where it is. Shakespeare uses this idea again in his “Sonnet 116”. It can in times of hardship and times of happiness. In O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi”, love is shown from two lovers when they are in a very desperate situation. They love each other so much they are willing to give their most prised possession to make the other happy. When __ was cutting her hair, “she faltered for a minute and stood still while a tear or two splashed on warm red carpet.” She is extremely distraught over having to lose her most prized possession, her hair. Yet she is willing to lose it for making her lover happy. __ is also willing to loose his most prized possession for the sake of making his lover happy. He “sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs.” He sold his beautiful watch to make his real prized possession happy, his wife. He would rather live in poverty with his wife the be rich without
