What comes with being a teenager and going through adolescence, is a brain that sometimes can't help itself or hold back. In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, there is a major rivalry between the capulet and montague families. Two teenagers from different houses fall in love at first sight. This love all happened very quickly on account of Romeo. Romeo is a 16 year old, impulsive, lover boy who makes a lot of bad decisions and mistakes like killing his wife's cousin and even killing himself before even putting his mind to it. Romeo said “I'll go along with no such sight to be shown, But to rejoice in splendor of my own.”(Shakespeare 1.2.103-104). Romeo agrees to go to the capulet party even when he had bad feelings about it. Him deciding to go to his rivals party was the first major bad decision he could have made because it was forbidden. Romeo and Juliet wouldn't have died and put their families through so much if Romeo held himself together. In an article by Daniel Siegel called “Why teenagers are so impulsive” Siegel mentions “If any notion turns immediately into an action without reflection, we are living our lives all gas pedal and no brakes.” (Siegel) If you constantly don't think about what you're doing before you do it then you’ll never slow down and this comes with consequences. Romeo didn't think much before going to the capulet party and what the consequences of going to a rival party can bring. In fact, the first day they meet he is so star struck by Juliet and her beauty that they get married the next day. Romeo said “We met, we wooed, and made an exchange of vow, I'll tell thee as we pass but this I pray: That thou consented to marry us today”(2.3.62-64). Romeo asks Friar Lawrence to marry him and Juliet the next day after they meet. These innocent teens are moving way too fast and Romeo fell in love with her beauty more than anything. This is a bad decision in many ways because their families are in a feud and in the end, love is basically what killed the both of them. Psychology today says “Because a romantic crush is a potent mix of idealization and infatuation, it doesn’t require knowing another person well at all … a superficial impression can be provocation enough” (Pickhardt 2). Crushes, especially at a young age, are mostly teenagers in love with the idea of being in love. Falling for someone so quickly isn't the best and Romeo and Juliet's situation can prove this. Romeo fell in love at first sight, or at least thought he was in love. Really, he is infatuated with the idea of it more than the girl herself. Romeo really is a hopeless romantic and in the long run, falling in love as quickly as he did was not a smart
