To make a drama end up tragically and to make readers to move by the tragic ending, roles of the sub-characters are as important as main characters. Above all, a heroic character and a character like villain are so important in a drama, and background and atmosphere are significant factors. In the drama Romeo & Juliet, there is a man who has both heroic and evil aspects and who is an indispensable character of the drama. He is Capulet, Juliet’s father.
Capulet was keeping a bad relationship with Montague’s family and objecting Juliet’s love with Romeo thoroughly. During the party, Romeo and Juliet could meet each other and fall in love. In this scene, his appearance was heroic and positive. If he did not stop his nephew, Romeo couldn’t avoid fighting with Tybalt and there might not be any chances to meet Juliet. He is a hero for them.
A message of Romeo & Juliet is hatred causes tragic ending rather than the greatness of love. In fact, tragic heroes in the drama who are caused from hatred are Capulet and Montague. If there was no loss of Capulet which is the death of Juliet and his nephew, there might be no touching, sadness and lesson. (I like this idea. It’s interesting that as a result of all this, there would be no love in the end, or emotion.)
Most is thinking about him as a villain and fool guy. But we need to think about it in other ways. In this drama, all characters have more than one meaning and role and they all are necessary.
