Anna Burachenok Ms. Arriada Survey, 3 Period 5 June 2023 Character Analysis: Romeo In Act V scene III of the play Romeo and Juliet, Romeo finds Juliet dead in the vault. Throughout the whole story, Romeo has made it his main goal to do whatever he can to be close to Juliet. Even though they just met and know close to nothing about each other, they feel a sort of pull towards each other, they have a sense of understanding. As the story develops we see just how far Romeo is willing to go to be with his newfound lover. One of the most significant obstacles that Romeo and Juliet struggle with is that they come from rival families who have been taught to hate each other. One is the side that comes through when he is with Juliet. The sweet, caring, innocent side of him which is hopelessly in love with Juliet. This is what made Juliet fall for him and it is also how Juliet continues to see him even as later on his behavior contradicts this personality. The other side is the violent side that you maybe wouldn’t think he had from how he acts with Juliet. On one hand, he is so sweet but on the other, we saw how he is capable of horrible things. He killed Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, and didn’t show much regret. Later he also kills Paris who tried to get in between him and Juliet as she was in the vault. One could argue that this is still the caring, compassionate Romeo, as he is technically killing these people out of love for and “in spite” of Juliet. Yet still, it must be hard for Juliet to process how the good-hearted boy she fell for is capable of such cruelty. It is also evident how quickly Romeo switches up, one moment he's telling Tybalt how he loves him, and the next, he kills him. It is understandable why the murder of his best friend angers him but going for revenge as severe as killing seems to be taking it a bit
