For centuries Romeo and Juliet has been said to be one of the greatest love stories to ever be told, but it was not all sunshine and rainbows. While it may have been a romance in the beginning, it quickly turned into a tragedy. In this play it is evident that personal choices have greater impact on the characters within it than destiny has. Changes within one's mindset and beliefs can happen all because of one single choice. It all starts when Gregory and Sampson (Capulets servants) are having a conversation and Gregory says, “The quarrel is between our masters and us their men” referring to the feud going on between the Capulets and the Montagues. Later on Romeo starts interacting more with the Capulets, such as when Romeo and Juliet hope to arrange a secret marriage and Romeo says, “Within this hour my man shall be with thee and bring the chords made like a tackles stair which to tie high topgallant of my joy must be convoy in the secret night” (Shakespeare A2 S4). He is still sneaking around but continues to get more and more risky as the play goes on such as when Romeo says, “either thou,or I, or Romeo said that because Tybolt was in support of the feud and did not support Juliet marrying a Montague and whilst the two sides are fighting Tybolt kills Mercutio and Romeo decides to fight with Tybolt not only for the cause of Mercutio but also to prove his love. While personal choices can change a person's life for good, it can also change their life for bad. For instance, in Act 4 scene three, Juliet would rather marry Romeo than Paris and she drinks a potion that puts her to sleep for 42 hours straight.
