Romeo and Juliet is about two kids from rival families falling in love with each other. With their families being rivals, they would never allow them to date, so they sneak behind their families to see each other. On the other hand, West Side Story is about two big-time rival gangs called the Sharks and the Jets. They fought on the West side of Upper Manhattan in New York City about their cultural differences; the Jets were Porta Rican, while the Sharks were white American men. It also shows how determined she is to be with Romeo. A scene from West Side Story that compares to this is when Bernardo tells Maria that he does not want her to marry this man, referring to Tony. She says she does not want to marry him. The quote matters because it shows how opposite Juliet and Maria are to each other. Juliet wanted to be married immediately, and Maria wanted to marry in the future. So even though they are both supposed to be the same person, they start very opposite, with one wanting to get married and the other not wanting to get married. In the middle of the story, Juliet then says to Romeo, "Shall I speak ill of him that is my husband." Shakespeare, Act 3, Scene 2, 106. That quote was said because Romeo had just killed Tybalt, and even though Tybalt was her family, she cared more about love than life. On the other end, Maria is mad at Tony, which comes from this moment in the movie where Maria bangs on Tony's chest after he kills Bernardo.
