Poetic Love And Independence: The Shift Between Juliet And Xiomara´s Familial and Romantic Relationships
¨Don't waste your love on somebody, who doesn't value it.¨ (Shakespeare). In The Poet X Xiomara uses poetry as a way to express her emotions. She often writes about how she feels that her mother is ashamed of her, even though Xiomara does as much as she can to please her mom. However, unlike her mother, a boy named Aman whom Xiomara starts dating appreciates her for who she is. Like Xiomara, Juliet from Romeo and Juliet has a negative relationship with her parents, but her love is appreciated when she falls in love with Romeo. It can seem like Romeo and Juliet´s relationship regressed since they both died because of it, but this is actually progression within their relationship and love for each other. Juliet´s love for Romeo has developed to be deep enough that as soon as she finds him dead she kills herself without hesitation so that, in a way, they can always be together. While they both died, they died for the love they cherished, which is a huge progression from Juliet refusing to marry.
Ultimately, Juliet from Romeo and Juliet and Xiomara from The Poet X progressed and regressed in their relationships with romantic partners and family. Xiomara progressed in her relationship with Aman like Juliet progressed in her relationship with Romeo, and both regressed in their relationships with their parents. The two girls' choices on how to handle the progression and regression can show how different people handle similar experiences as well. While both characters fought with their parents, Xiomara chose to face the situation, while Juliet chose to try and run away with Romeo. While both characters had a prominent love interest, Juliet chose Romeo over her family, while Xiomara chose her family before Aman. The difference in the way that they reacted to similar situations is a good demonstration of dealing with the consequences of one's
