Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is one of the most popular Renaissance plays in today’s time. Over the years, Romeo and Juliet has been on Broadway, in the movies, and performed by many school groups around the world. Because of its popularity, Romeo and Juliet has influenced many movies such as: West Side Story, Gnomeo and Juliet, Underworld, and Romanoff and Juliet. Not only is the play so popular that it was made into a movie, but it was made into several movie renditions. Two popular renditions are the 2013 version and the 1996 version. Even though filmmakers make many renditions not all of them stay true to Shakespeare’s play. In the 2013 version, the characters are portrayed quite well. One example of an exceptional performance is Ed Westwick’s portrayal of Tybalt. He shows that ill-tempered, hot-headed personality, and that loyalty to the Capulets that the character, Tybalt, shows in the play. Another example of a well-done performance is Damian Lewis’ portrayal of Lord Capulet. He shows that he has authority and that “his way or the highway” attitude that one sees in the character, Lord Capulet. The performances of Romeo and Juliet by Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld are great, as well. They both show great affection for each other and that “I can’t live without you” attitude, exactly like the characters Romeo and Juliet do in the play. However, one thing about their performances that one would say is missing is the innocence of the characters they portray. They were more of like a grownup version of the couple rather than the innocent teenagers there supposed to be. Finally, Paul Giamatti’s portrayal of Friar Lawrence was excellent. He really makes it clear to the audience about his desperation to end the feud between the families. He also shows how much he really cares about Romeo and Juliet.
