Romeo and Juliet is set during Elizabethan age when women had to acquiesce to men. This was known as patriarchal society. It was the time when fathers decided whom they are gonna marry to and whom to not. This period was an internal peace between the English Reformation and battles between Protestants and Catholics.
The narrative voices in songs and literature, occasionally show male characters expressing their emotions enthusiastically towards a female character. Sir Paul McCartney wrote a song titled "Michelle" about a boy trying to profess his love the best way he can to a girl who only speaks french. Lines 44-53 of Romeo and Juliet is an excerpt of a play written by William Shakespeare. In Act 1, Scene 5, Romeo is trying to describe the love he feels for Juliet after seeing her for the first time. In both pieces, it is shown that men should know what love feels like as soon as they think they have fallen in love, even if they can’t describe their emotions properly and feel like they should verbally explain it to those around them.
Introduction: When people feel that they can freely express their frustrations, and feel that they are unpleased with an opinion from a government or kingdom. These types of people (such as Romeo) will often feel an uncontrolled urge to take matters into their own hands. And this will lead up to finding them in an act of defiance. Additionally, this is what makes our main heroine Romeo defies his family (or house) and marries Juliet without their acknowledgment. Body paragraphs: Romeo has a strong desire to help end the family feud, Romeo’s strong will to go against the house Capulet and marry Juliet.

Benjamin Franklin once said, “Beauty, like supreme dominion, is but supported by opinion.” Franklin wrote this in the 1741 edition of the Poor Richards Almanac and was trying to say that beauty is something that each individual interprets in their own way. For me to see something as being beautiful, it has to make me want to capture it in some form. Photography is my most chosen form of capturing something because my mind will one day forget it. I find that most of the picture that I take are of nature.
With all of this stated, Romeo is portrayed as a typical male of the time since he married Juliet despite the fact that she was so
Women became less strong and didn’t find the courage to act on their own or solve problems on their own. Juliet may have ended her own life because she truly loved Romeo, or she didn’t want to face the tragedy on her own. In conclusion, women’s rights played a huge role in the play Romeo and Juliet and could be one of the deeper meanings within the
Victims. Time and time again women have been victims of misogyny, commodification, and social obligation. Women are forced to squeeze into an idealistic mold and confrom to society’s standards. They have been stripped of their right to have a say in what is being done to them, and are sold off as property to their husbands who treat them as inferior. These husbands seem to have no regard for the opinion of their wives; as if being male brings superiority.
Romeo and Juliet Compare and Contrast Although Romeo and Juliet grew up in two different households meant to hate each other from the day of their birth, these two star crossed lovers find each other in a different light. In the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet By William Shakespeare, Romeo being a Montague and Juliet being a Capulet were born into this family feud. The two of them fall in love at a party where Romeo was out looking for the original girl he was in love with, Rosaline, and Juliet was there to meet her future husband Paris. With love playing a huge part in this play, it's concluded that Romeo and Juliet are both a Eros kind of lover.
The play Romeo and Juliet is about two star-crossed lovers that would die for each other. It might seem romantic, but it is an example of an unhealthy relationship because it shows sex discrimination, violence, and codependency. Sexism shows up multiple times in the play Romeo and Juliet. The stereotype of women being weaker than men is portrayed throughout the play.
Throughout this book, many men treated their wives as if they were servants or maids. Women knew that after marriage, their sole purpose was to please their husband, take care of the house, and look after their children. This is shown in the play when Nurse talks to Juliet about marrying Paris. She prepares Juliet for what Paris will want from her during the night of their wedding. Judging by female characters in Romeo and Juliet, women didn’t have jobs; with exception of being maids and nurses.
Their tough archetypes were always present in many plays and reinforced the idea of male superiority. This fact held true, especially for a certain tragic classic by William Shakespeare. There was a misogynistic mentality towards women in Romeo and Juliet, evident through the way women were shown as objects, portrayed as weak, and made to seem unable to dictate their own lives. Men in Romeo and Juliet could be seen acting like owners towards women. Women were seen as nothing more than possessions, as illustrated when Romeo first described Juliet as, “My lady…/my love” (II.ii.10).
In today’s world, gender expectations and roles of men and women are a highly debated topic. However, the reconsidering of these expectations is not a new phenomenon. Set in Verona, Italy, the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare explores the reversal and fluidity of characteristics usually assigned to a specific gender. In this play, two young people fall in love and end up tragically taking their lives as a result of their forbidden love. Shakespeare suggests that men are not necessarily masculine, women are not necessarily feminine, and that when people are forced by society to act the way their gender is “supposed” to, problems will arise.
During the Elizabethan period, the role of women in society was very different from what it is today. According to the system of patriarchal society that dictated that women were inferior to men, they had to obey the male figures in their lives. The woman was seen as the weaker sex either physically or emotionally which meant that it was entirely dependent on her husband if married and members of his family if single. Moreover, in the Elizabethan theater, women were not allowed to play because of this hierarchy. Therefore, they were replaced by men disguised as women.
Society norms are unwritten rules on what behaviour is acceptable amongst a community and often considered somewhat constraining. In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare illustrates how Juliet, Romeo, and Friar Lawrence breaking societal norms or laws lead to the young couple’s eventual death. The play further portrays that not following such societal norms can often be the cause of life- altering events and chaos. To begin with, women are expected to be blindly obedient and show no defiance in the mostly patriarchal environment of Verona. During Act 2, Juliet agrees to marry Romeo despite being fully aware her parents would never consent to her marriage to a Montague.
