“When I saw you I fell in love, and you smiled because you knew.” This quote from William Shakespeare comes alive in his famous play Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was written in the sixteenth century, but is still a popular playscript today. Romeo and Juliet the play by Shakespeare and the movie may not seem relatable to one another. However aspects dialogue, characterization, and plot structure have numerous points of comparison and contrast. Dialogue aspects were quite similar from both the playscript and the movie. Shakespeare has many scenes where Juliet has siliques throughout the play, to describe her feelings for Romeo. In the exposition of the play it shows a fight breaking out between the two rival families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Which is alike to the opening scene of the movie where the jousting tournament between the two families was just beginning. Throughout the movie the scenes stuck closely in the exposition and the rising action. The playscript strongly follows along with Mercutio’s murder. After a fight broke out in the streets of Verona which killed Mercutio, Romeo sets out for revenge on the murder, and is then banished from the city as punishment for killing another man. The same was what happened in the movie, after Mercutio was murdered Romeo set out for his murderer, Tybalt, Romeo is then banished for the killing of Tybalt. The director of the movie Romeo and Juliet did a splendid job of sticking to the playscript throughout the movie’s exposition and rising action, but in the movie there was a different climax than the play. The climax in the play was when Lord Capulet moves up the wedding one day, throwing off Juliet and Friar Laurence’s plan. But, in the movie they showed the climax to be when Friar Laurence’s messenger was stopped to help someone, causing the messenger not to make it to Mantua before Romeo left.
