Who knew love between rivals could be so deadly? In the play Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare and published between 1591 and 1596, two young lovers, known as Romeo and Juliet, are part of a family rivalry. The rivalry is between the families known as the Capulets and Montagues, but Romeo and Juliet unexpectedly fell in love with one another, making their love for each other forbidden. This is evidenced by the fact that Romeo snuck out to go visit Juliet after they both found out that they were each other’s sworn enemies. Leading Romeo to tell Juliet how he feels about her and the situation caused by families, leaving him to state that “I hate my name, dear saint because my name is your enemy. If I had written it down, I would tear up the paper”. Is showing that Romeo is feeling self-hatred because his love for her cannot exist since they cannot get married after all they are each other’s sworn enemies. Continuing how hatred is shown in the book when the Nurse and Juliet were talking to each other after Romeo had just left the party, Juliet was so mesmerized by him that she went on and asked the nurse “If he’s married, I think I’ll die rather than marry anyone else”. Is showing that she is feeling a little bit of hatred towards herself since she said she wouldn’t be able to picture herself with anyone else but Romeo, let alone if he were already married to someone else. In addition to this, Romeo and the Nurse were talking about Juliet since she is indeed a Capulet because the Nurse had called Juliet previously by telling her that her mother, Lady Capulet, was calling her, leaving Romeo in a panic where he said, “Is she a Capulet? O dear account! My life is my foe’s debt”. Romeo was stating that how could it possibly be that the girl he fell in love with is someone he shouldn’t be in love with?
